A Conductive Plate / Une Plaque Conductrice

Just above the LED screen, there is a glass transparent conductive plate, the touch screen, with some electrodes at each corner. An electronic circuit is powering the electrodes and measure the intensity of the electricity in real time.
Juste au-dessus de l’écran LED, il y a une fine plaque de verre, la couche tactile, comportant des circuits et une électrode à chacun de ses coins. L’ensemble est relié à un circuit électronique qui alimente les électrodes et mesure en temps réel l’intensité du courant.

When your finger touches the screen, electricity is created in each electrode that crosses the touch screen and is escaped by your fingers to the ground. The intensity of the electricity of each electrode is changing when you’re moving your finger. Comparing the electric intensity of the electrodes allows the iPhone to calculate where your finger is touching the screen.
Lorsque le doigt touche la plaque tactile, il se forme dans chaque électrode un courant qui traverse la plaque tactile et s’échappe par le doigt jusqu’à la terre. L’intensité du courant de chaque électrode variera avec la distance du doigt de ces électrodes. La comparaison des quatres intensités permet de déduire la position du doigt sur la plaque.

A Software to calculate the movement of the finger / Un logiciel qui décode le mouvement du doigt

A software interprets the action the user is doing by collecting those information (initial touch position, direction, speed and final touch position). The iPhone has a very complex algorithm to allow to collect information about multi simultaneous touch, allowing you to zoom for example…
Un logiciel interprète l’action commandée par l’utilisateur en fonction des informations collectées (point de contact initial, direction, vitesse et point d’arrivée. L’iPhone et son multitouche permet de détecter plusieurs points de contact et donc de réaliser des mouvements plus complexes (zoom par exemple).

En fait, je vais essayer d’apporter une explication simple à des situations des tous les jours… Un peu comme de la vulgarisation scientifique en quelques sorte! So let’s start with our first question: Why is it hard to enter water at 20°C while we are not cold at 20°C outside of water?
Commençons avec notre première question: Pourquoi est-ce du d’entrer dans l’eau à 20° alors que qu’on a pas froid à l’air à 20°?

The air is at 20°C. We’re not cold. We enter 20°C water and we are cold. But it’s the same temperature, so why? In fact, water is a way better thermal conductor than air. So when we are in contact of water, we lose more heat that we are in the contact of air, which is a good thermal conductor (think about double glazed window). That’s the same thing with metal and wood: Metal is a better thermal conductor that wood, which is in fact an insulator. Which is why in the winter, your ass get colder when sitting outside on a metal bench that on a wood bench…
L’air est à 20°. On a pas froid. On entre dans une eau à 20° et on a froid. Pourtant c’est la même température, alors pourquoi? En fait, l’eau est une meilleur conducteur thermique que l’air. Donc quand nous sommes au contact de l’eau, on perd plus de chaleur qu’au contact de l’air, qui est en fait un très bon isolant thermique (pensez au vitres doubles vitrages). C’est la même chose avec le métal et le bois: le métal est un bien meilleur conducteur thermique que le bois, qui est lui un isolant. C’est pourquoi en hiver, on a beaucoup plus froid aux fesses en s’asseyant sur une banc en métal que sur un banc en bois…
